Children behaviour conveys messages. These messages, however, may not be as transparent and straightforward as we think or we might have hoped they were. Take as an example a child with an aggressive behaviour. Is it just a child who "misbehaves" because they don't understand limits or a child who might suffer from depression or is this behaviour reaction to a trigger for a traumatic event? In understanding the message a behaviour conveys, It is important to enhance our knowledge on issues such as that trauma comes back as a reaction (for example aggression) rather than a memory. And it is as important that our response to children convey the message to them that they are seen for what they are and that they are heard beyond first impressions. Our work as part of The Safe Space Project is to help school communities translate this principle to actionable steps towards becoming trauma sensitive.
